Hai Duong good for new int’l airport – Sẽ xây dựng sân bay quốc tế ở Hải Dương

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has reported to the National Assembly on the government’s plan to build a new international airport for the north, which will be located on the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway.

Hung said that the construction of the new airport would be conducted in parallel with the expansion of major airports of Vietnam, including Noi Bai in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat in HCM City and Long Thanh in Dong Nai.

Prof., Dr. Nguyen The Ba, Chairman of the Vietnam Urban Development and Planning Association, told VietNamNet that it was necessary to build a new international airport in the north. The airport will be a stimulus for the country’s development.

Ba said that the northern airport system comprises six airports but only one of them, Noi Bai, is an international airport, which welcomes around 4 million passengers a year, extremely low in comparison with the capacity of international airports of neighbouring countries such as Don Muong (Thailand) with 30 million passengers and Changi of Singapore with 25 million passengers a year.

In addition, some airports in the north, including Noi Bai, were designed as military airports and in the peaceful age, they are used for civilian purposes so it is difficult to expand Noi Bai into a modern and large international airport.

Realising the significance of a new international airport for the north, the Vietnam Urban Development and Planning Association suggested that the government build a new airport in late 2006. The most important element of the new airport is its position. The airport must not too far from Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Thai Binh Hung Yen and Ha Nam.

Many workshops were held to choose a suitable place for the new airport and many experts agreed on the southern part of Hai Duong city.

After analysing economic, social, technical aspects, the Vietnam Urban Development and Planning Association chose an area that covers the communes of Hong Quang, Binh Xuyen, Doan Tung and Lam Son communes in Thanh Mien district, Hai Duong city to submit to the government for consideration. The association also set some standards for the new airport (Soure: vietnamnet).
